What an ending to the weekend. My 17yo, Chase, went snowboarding on Sunday with friends. I was a bit nervous about it all day, knowing it was going to be primarily ice on the slopes since we haven’t had much snow. Ice and snowboarding (or skiing for that matter) don’t go well together.

Well, long story short…I get a voicemail from ski patrol to call them immediately and instantly I go into panicked-mom-mode. After several failed attempts to reach them, I finally get a phone call from Chase and instantly I’m relieved. Thank you Jesus!! Just hearing his voice is all I needed.

Ended up that he had fallen hard and hurt his wrist. We went today for x-rays and they’re pretty certain he sprained it pretty badly. I am so thankful it wasn’t anything close to where my mind was going in those agonizingly, long minutes before I finally touched base with him.

Sorry, for anyone new to this blog, I am going to get to the happy home decor stuff…I promise. Just had to share our “never a dull moment with four boys” weekend update with you first. But onto the reason you’re here πŸ™‚ …

Before our eventful Sunday, I spent Saturday tearing down trim…

IMG_5383

Yep, it’s starting!! As I said I was going to do, I’m changing all of our trim over to craftsman trim. And the little bit I’ve gotten partially finished–I absolutely LOVE!! (I have done more than the picture below, but this was the best picture I had) πŸ™‚ …

IMG_5386

But the picture does not do it justice at all!! I will share more of this as I move along with it. And hopefully will have better pictures to share too. πŸ™

But for today I would like to share with you a project I fell in love with over the holidays. It is so incredibly easy and makes such a great gift for any time of the year. And actually, why does it have to be a gift? You can make one for yourself too. πŸ™‚ O.k. I know, the suspense is killing you…not really πŸ™‚ So here it is….

IMG_5392

Drumroll please….A chalkboard. And as the sign reads…it is COLD outside. Don’t let that sunshine peaking through fool you. It did nothing to warm up this negative temps, blistery cold day!! πŸ™ Β NOTHING!!

Ok, onto how to make this super-easy chalkboard…First, cut three 1×3’s to 30 inches. And two 1×3’s to 14 inches. (Using a miter saw or Home Depot will make your cuts for you, if that’s easier)…

IMG_4964

Next step works best if you have a Kreg Jig. They are not expensive (right around $100). Well worth it if you’re going to continue doing projects. I promise you will use this thing all. the. time…

IMG_4965

Don’t be intimidated by it…It’s very easy to use. Clamp in your 14″ 1×3. (As shown below)…

IMG_4966

Using your drill and the kreg jig bit, drill holes into hole A and hole B. (As shown below)…

IMG_4968

Do this on both ends of both boards. They should look like this when finished…

IMG_4969

Then drill your 14″ pieces into your 30″ pieces…

IMG_4973

When finished it will look like this…

IMG_4974

Now you are ready to paint. I used this paint for mine…

IMG_4975

“Junk Gypsy Happy Camper” with a little bit of white paint dry-brushed over the top.

As you can see, I am not a clean painter at all!!! My grandpa would NOT be proud. πŸ™

IMG_4976

I was making three of these at the time of this picture. Hence the two side-by-side. (In the above picture)

Next you’re ready to attach the chalkboard. I bought mine from Home Depot. Cut it to size..24″x 15.5″ and attach to back of frame…

IMG_5359

I used tiny nails to hammer this onto my frame. Sorry about my blogfail…I forgot to take a picture of this before it was finished. So, ignore the long board going across the chalkboard–that step is coming next. πŸ™‚

Now you’re ready to attach the long board….this is what will prop your chalkboard up, allowing it to stand.

Using a 2 1/2″ hinge, attach your remaining 30″ board to the completed frame…

Photo bomber…Hampton. πŸ™‚

IMG_5364

Lastly, you’re ready for the rope. Drill a hole about 4″ from bottom of 30″ board you just attached. Insert rope into hole and tie a knot…

IMG_5366

Attach other end of rope (approximately 22″ long) to frame and nail down…

IMG_5367

When finished the back will look like this…

IMG_5368

And the front will look like this…

IMG_5362

I love this sign. It is so versatile. I made four of them over the holidays to give away as gifts. –Okay…I kept one for myself. πŸ™‚ –They were a hit!! And like I said, Super-Easy to make!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week!! And stay warm!!!
