Last week I shared how to build the mid century modern nightstand I built for my master bedroom. As promised, this week I’m sharing the topper you can add to these nightstands and the hardware I chose. After I finished building the nightstands, I loved them BUT they felt too short for the height of my bed. I was so disappointed and reached out to my Instagram peeps for some ideas. As usual, they did not fail me. In the end, I went with this idea to add height to the nightstands…..

EASY HOW TO BUILD MCM NIGHTSTANDS TOPPER (2 easy steps)

The following plans are for one nightstand. Please duplicate the material and plans for two.

Materials Needed:

(Amazon Affiliate Links Included)

4×8 sheet of 3/4″ plywood

1 1/4″ Pocket Hole Screws

1 1/4″ GRK screws

Stain (I chose Varathane Golden Oak)

hardware

Poly

Tools Needed:

(Amazon Affiliate Links Included)

Miter Saw

Table Saw (jigsaw or circular saw will work too)

Drill

Kreg Jig

Sander

Step One: Cut the sides

Rip 3/4″ plywood to 5 1/2″ wide strips (2) and cut to fit the top. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes along one long edge and attach to nightstand top with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. Do this for both sides….

Step Two: Cut the top

Rip 3/4″ plywood to fit on top of the sides you just attached above. Attach to sides using 1 1/4″ GRK screws.

Sand and add paint or stain and that’s it! You now have more height (and storage) for your nightstands. Such an easy fix and it looks like they were meant to be built just like this!!

I love how I now have a place to put all of my stuff that I don’t want to put away in a drawer, but don’t really want them being the focal point on the top of the nightstands either. So this little cubby area is perfect for my book, eyeglasses, remote controls, all the little things we use on a nightly basis.

In addition to sharing the topper this week, I also promised to share with you which hardware I chose for the nightstands. I was going back and forth between these two….

Once again, after throwing it out there to all of you who follow me on Instagram, the overwhelming vote was to go with the black hardware. And I love it!!

So happy with how this entire room is coming together….

With just a couple projects left, it’s almost time to check this one off my list and move into the next big project. Any ideas on what room I’m starting next?

Be sure to check back next week, when I share, the easiest way to paint window trim as I paint the trim around the window in the picture above– black!

Until next time,
