How to Build a Functional Organization Board

The month of January screams organization!! Walking through Target we are greeted with multi-colored stacks of storage bins…which I don’t know about you, but conjures up in me some guilty feelings of, I need to get organized!! And now that there’s actually a whole Netflix series on organization (I see you, Marie Kondo fans!!), let’s just say the guilt trip is on overdrive!! So, let’s jump in and talk organization board.

Today’s project is the perfect fit for January and really makes organization easy. An organization board is great for keeping all of your papers, notes, schedules, etc in order. I have thrown together three of these. I use the words “thrown together” because it really is THAT simple.

My teenage daughter has two organization boards in her room. Which is actually quite fitting for her in keeping up with all of her social calendar events. 🙂 I shared the plans for her first organization board in this blog post a while back. It all transpired from an old window and is probably my favorite one I’ve built.

My most recent organization boards were made out of old pallet boards I’ve had laying around in my scrap wood pile for quite awhile now. The one above my daughter’s desk is made with an old frame that I spray painted white.

A few weeks back I did a total makeover on our mudroom and the entire theme was organization!! You can check out that post here. I still marvel at this room and am amazed by the before and afters. Such a fun project. The organization board in this room is framed with 1 x 2’s.

So, as you can see, there are so many ways you can make an organization board. But for today’s project, I’m going to show you how to make one using 1 x 2’s, for the frame. (Just keep in mind an old picture frame or window frame will also work–fun to be creative).

Let’s get on with it….

HOW TO BUILD AN ORGANIZATION BOARD…

Materials Needed:

Old pallet boards or 1×4’s

1 x 2 board (length is dependent upon the size of your organization board)

Nail gun/nails (hammer and nails will work too)

Nail filler

Paint

Command Center Items (i.e.: dry erase board, cork board, etc….these are all personal preference)

Step One:

Determine the size you want your board to be. This is mostly dependent upon the space you want to display it. My organization board in the mudroom is 35″ X 25″.

Step Two:

Determine if you want your boards to run vertically or horizontally. I ran mine vertically. So, at this step, I cut each of my boards to 25″. Cut enough boards to lay them across 35″ wide.

Step Three:

Paint your boards. I alternated with these five different colors. (See the end of this post for the names of these paint colors)…

Step Four:

After your boards have dried, you’re ready to cut your 1 x 2’s for your frame. Lay out your 1 x 4’s to the width you want your organization board to be and cut your 1 x 2’s to fit on the perimeter of your 1 x 4’s….

Step Five:

After your 1 x 2’s are cut, paint them and then attach them to your boards using a nail gun…

Step Six:

Now, you will need to fill in all of the nail holes using nail filler. After filling these in and sanding it down, add another coat of paint to the tops of your boards…

As you can see from the picture above, my first paint choices were darker colors. I wasn’t wild about this and ended up with the paint colors shown here (and listed at the end of this post)…

You’re now ready to add your extras. I went with a dry erase board and basket/key holder for the mudroom…

Above Lauryn’s desk, we added a dry erase board, cork board and one-week calendar….

I love practical, useful projects and these organization boards definitely fit into that category! And was I right? So easy!!!
