Modern Teen Bedroom Makeover–What to Tackle First

TEEN BEDROOM MAKEOVER

I am always a sucker for anything having to do with my power tools. So when Lauryn came to me over this past summer and asked if we could makeover her bedroom and give it a much needed update, I was all in!! It didn’t take much convincing on her part. 🙂 Have I mentioned, I love this stuff!!

A few posts back, I shared some different areas of Lauryn’s room and some of the changes we were making. So today, I want to give a full update on what all we did for this makeover and share all the pretty pictures with you…and some not so pretty ones. 😉

Let’s start with a few not-so-pretty pictures and look at Lauryn’s room before the teen bedroom makeover…

Oh my! What a mess!! Did I mention she’s a teenager? :\ May I divert your attention to that wall back there…It was time for the chevron to go…

See this dresser…watch for it again a little ways down in this post…

It was time for a desk upgrade…

Let the teen bedroom makeover begin…

Modern Teen Bedroom Makeover--What to Tackle First

The first thing to go, was all of that builder’s grade trim…

Baseboards, door frames, window frames, all of it–GONE…

Modern Teen Bedroom Makeover--What to Tackle First

As you saw in the above pictures, that carpet was rough. So, yep, I pulled that out too…

Part of the “deal” of Lauryn’s remodel plea was that she would help me. I had visions of us tackling this project head-on together, with Lauryn eager to learn all I had to teach her. 😉 She helped paint her room…

And that was about it…….My high hopes of her loving this stuff as much as her mother—crushed. 🙁

Now that the demolition was done and the walls were painted, it was time for the transformation to start to take place.

Shiplap first of course…

I chose a specific order of attack for a reason:

  • I applied the shiplap and painted it before laying the laminate flooring, so as not to get unnecessary paint marks on my floors…

  • I added my trim after the shiplap because I wanted to apply my trim over the shiplap…

The next step was to finish the rest of the trim. Door and window frames…

I had a little friend join me on this warm summer night, while buidling my door frame toppers out in the garage…

I chose to shiplap only one wall and board and batten the remaining walls…

Having just returned from my annual DIY Blogging Conference, I had a new toy to play with. I couldn’t wait to try it out. This Wagner Paint Sprayer worked great…for a little while…and then, it didn’t anymore. I believe it was more a user malfunction (me) than the actual product itself. I should have taken more time to practice with the tool than just diving in…

Would love to give a full tutorial on this at some point, but I should probably dig it back out of it’s box first and learn how to use it, before instilling my wisdom upon you… 🙂 Haha! Totally kidding!!

One of the frustrating things about this tool was that I had paint going everywhere and it’s not supposed to do that. The paint was also coming out kinda in splotches and not smooth. Ya, totally human-error. I was really wishing at this point, I would have just hand-painted/rolled the walls. So much for painting ahead of time to avoid paint marks on the floor. I laid underlayment paper to cover practically every square inch of the floor, which was kinda helpful.

I painted all of the trim first with Behr Marquee Ultra Pure White…

Then painted the rest of the walls with Behr Marquee White Moderne…

Now we had a very white, sterile room that was screaming for some pops of color. I couldn’t wait to change out all of the doors in the room. For the main door, I built a sliding barn door, of course. 🙂 Check out this post on how to build your own sliding barn door and this post on how to then hang your sliding barn door. They are both really great tutorials and show just how easy it is to get this look…

Those closet doors needed a change too…From this…

To these chalkboard paint closet doors…

Lauryn loves these doors and I love seeing her creativity come to life and love to read the inspiring messages her friends leave for her. So Sweet!! This is, by far, one of my favorite changes to the teen bedroom makeover. And the black makes such a bold statement. So fun! Go to this link to read more about these doors and how to get this look.

Now, it was time to add Lauryn’s touches. To allow her personality to shine. She loved the idea of a mixture of black, a softer hue of green, blush pink, and grays. So off to the stores we went.

We got all of her bedding at Target…

I found this desk at a consignment shop. It wreaked of mustiness and cigarette smoke! With a cleaning technique, paint and poly the smell was gone. (You can check out the before and afters and how I got rid of that terrible smell, of this desk, here)…

And this unique light–Ikea…

Remember that dresser I mentioned before…

Amazing what paint can do. Here it is now…

Having redone our youngest boys’ room a few years back, it was fun to give Lauryn’s room a much-needed update too. Still need to fill this big wall with some large decorative pieces…

But overall, I am very happy with how this all came together…

And all the finishing touches Lauryn has added to make this her teen bedroom makeover…

Does her room ever look like the picture at the top of this post anymore? Heck ya!!! But we choose our battles, right mamas? And about once a week, we battle that one out. 🙂

Until next time,

Happy building!!
