Sliding Doors Upgrade-One Room Challenge Week 6

SLIDING DOORS UPGRADE!!

ORC Image

Two more weeks! Usually at the two week countdown mark of the One Room Challenge, it’s time to be wrapping up projects.

Not demoing ones you just did a few weeks ago. But something wasn’t sitting right with this wall….

Accent wall with shiplap and two sliding doors (blue)

I just wasn’t loving it! It was putting off more of a farmhouse vibe and not the modern feel the rest of the kitchen is adapting to. So, it had to go. Ripping all of that vertical shiplap off, really did a number on this wall….

I have to admit, I was a little nervous. Wondering if I would ever be able to fix this wall. Was it even possible for that surface to be smooth and blemish free again? Or would it require all new drywall? Ugh! What had I done!? But as my demolition motto always goes: It has to look bad before it can look good. And so it began to look even worse as I teared off more and more of the drywall that was peeling away….

After peeling away the loose pieces and sanding it down, I painted a couple coats of primer onto it.

Now I was ready to start the mudding process. I used wall plaster I had on-hand.  Already it was looking a little better and I was able to breathe a little better too. 🙂

Once the plaster dried, it was time to sand again. What a mess! I think I’ll have wall dust floating in the air ’til Christmas. It was bad! But the wall looked good! Especially once I added a couple coats of paint (Behr White Moderne). I couldn’t believe how well it turned out!

And with the new modern doors I had just given an upgrade to, it was exactly the look I was going for.

I had built these doors a few years ago and loved them with my modern farmhouse kitchen….

But again, that’s not the style of my kitchen anymore. So, these doors were really throwing everything off. I contemplated getting rid of them completely. But in the end I settled with just giving them a new look. Just adding a couple of 1x’s, took these doors from farmhouse to modern!

I love the new paint color too! Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black is my go-to for all things painted black! And with the Champagne Bronze spray painted handle, it’s perfect!

But again, while I loved the new updated sliding doors, I did not love that wall…

This is much better…

Black is definitely the accent color in my kitchen. I chose black because it is timeless. My plan is not to have to redo this kitchen again for many years down the road. 🙂 I’ve had some people ask about the other paint colors I chose. So, here’s an easy reference guide:

WALL COLOR: Behr White Moderne (Satin Finish)

TRIM COLOR: Behr Ultra Pure White (Semi-Gloss Finish)

ACCENT COLOR: Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black (Satin Finish) (Center Island, Sliding doors, Color Block behind shelves)

PANTRY COLOR: Benjamin Moore French Beret (Satin Finish)

MUDROOM CUBBIES: Benjamin Moore French Beret (Satin Finish)

SLATTED ACCENT WALL; COLOR BLOCK SHELVES: Golden Oak Stain

Next week will definitely be all about the flooring! We’re getting down to crunch time and I’m starting to feel the pressure. Ready or not, these floors are going down. I do have a bit of a start with all of the baseboards removed. I also added a leveler/floor patch to even out some uneven flooring spots. Our dishwasher leaked a few years ago and caused some of the hardwood floors to buckle. These boards would be problematic with the new flooring, so I’m hopeful this patch will make the floor completely level. Be sure to check back next week to see the progress on the flooring. I promise, it will not disappoint! SNEAK PEEK…
